Central Maine Power Company: A Reliable and Sustainable Utility

Central Maine Power Company (CMP) is the largest electricity transmission and distribution utility in Maine, serving more than 653,000 customers across 346 communities in central and southern Maine. CMP is a subsidiary of AVANGRID, Inc., a leading sustainable energy company in the United States. CMP strives to provide safe, reliable, and affordable service to its customers, while also investing in renewable energy, grid modernization, and customer satisfaction.

History and Operations

CMP was established in 1899 by William F. Wyman, a pioneer in the electric industry. CMP started with a small hydroelectric plant on the Kennebec River, and gradually expanded its service area and generation capacity over the years. CMP was one of the first utilities in the country to adopt the alternating current system, which enabled the transmission of electricity over long distances. CMP also played a key role in the development of the New England power grid, which interconnected the utilities in the region and improved the reliability and efficiency of the system1

Today, CMP operates approximately 23,500 miles of distribution lines and 2,900 miles of transmission lines, delivering electricity to residential, commercial, and industrial customers. CMP also purchases electricity from various sources, including hydroelectric, wind, solar, biomass, and natural gas plants. CMP is committed to increasing the share of renewable energy in its portfolio, and supports the state’s goal of achieving 100% clean energy by 2050. CMP is also a member of the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI), a cooperative effort among nine Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the power sector12

Projects and Initiatives

CMP is constantly working to improve its infrastructure and services, and to meet the evolving needs and expectations of its customers. Some of the major projects and initiatives that CMP is currently involved in are:

  • The New England Clean Energy Connect (NECEC) project, which is a 145-mile transmission line that will deliver 1,200 megawatts of hydropower from Quebec, Canada, to the New England grid. The project will reduce carbon emissions, lower electricity costs, and enhance grid reliability and security. The project is expected to be completed by 2023, and has received approval from the Maine Public Utilities Commission, the Maine Department of Environmental Protection, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The project is also supported by the Maine Governor, the Maine Legislature, and various environmental and business groups34
  • The Smart Grid project, which is a $200 million investment to upgrade CMP’s metering and communication systems, and to provide customers with more information and control over their energy usage. The project involves installing advanced meters, smart switches, and fiber-optic cables, and creating a web portal and a mobile app for customers. The project will enable CMP to monitor and manage the grid more efficiently, and to offer new programs and services, such as time-of-use rates, demand response, and distributed generation. The project is expected to be completed by 2022, and has received funding from the U.S. Department of Energy and the Maine Public Utilities Commission.
  • The Customer Service Excellence initiative, which is a comprehensive effort to improve CMP’s customer service and satisfaction. The initiative involves hiring more customer service representatives, enhancing the training and coaching of the staff, upgrading the customer service systems and processes, and implementing new customer feedback mechanisms. The initiative also involves launching new customer outreach and education campaigns, such as the Energy Manager program, which provides customers with personalized energy-saving tips and tools. The initiative aims to increase CMP’s customer satisfaction scores, reduce customer complaints, and strengthen customer loyalty.

CMP is a reliable and sustainable utility that provides electricity to more than 653,000 customers in Maine. CMP is a subsidiary of AVANGRID, Inc., a leading sustainable energy company in the United States.
