UPI Payments: A New Revolution in Digital Transactions

UPI, or Unified Payments Interface, is an instant payment system that allows users to transfer money between bank accounts using their smartphones. UPI was launched by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) in 2016, with the aim of making digital transactions easier, faster, and safer for the masses. UPI has become one of the most popular and widely used payment methods in India, with over 300 million monthly active users and over 10 billion transactions as of August 202312

How UPI Works

UPI works on the principle of virtual payment addresses (VPAs), which are unique identifiers that link a user’s bank account to their mobile number. A user can create a VPA using any UPI-enabled app, such as Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, or BHIM. A VPA can be in the format of username@bankname, such as ravi@icici, or username@upi, such as ravi@upi. A user can have multiple VPAs for different bank accounts or purposes34

To make a payment using UPI, a user needs to enter the VPA of the recipient, the amount, and a remark (optional). The user then needs to enter a four-digit personal identification number (PIN), which is set by the user while creating the VPA. The PIN is used to authenticate the transaction and is known only to the user. The transaction is then processed in real-time, and the money is transferred from the sender’s bank account to the recipient’s bank account. The user and the recipient both receive a confirmation message on their UPI apps34

To receive a payment using UPI, a user needs to share their VPA with the sender, or generate a QR code that contains their VPA. The sender can then scan the QR code or enter the VPA on their UPI app, and follow the same steps as mentioned above. Alternatively, a user can also request a payment from another user, by entering their VPA and the amount on their UPI app. The other user will then receive a notification on their UPI app, and can accept or reject the request34
